Math 5520 Class Notes – Finite Abelian Groups

The main goal in this section is to prove the Fundamental Theorem of Abelian Groups, which roughly speaking says that every finite, abelian group is isomorphic to a product of cyclic groups. In other words, if A is a finite, abelian group, then there are positive integers, n1, . . . , nr, so that A ∼= Z/n1Z× · · · × Z/nrZ. It’s possible to have Z/n1Z × · · · × Z/nrZ ∼= Z/m1Z × · · · × Z/msZ whe...

non-divisibility for abelian groups

Throughout all groups are abelian. We say a group G is n-divisible if nG = G. If G has no non-zero n-divisible subgroups for all n>1 then we say that G is absolutely non-divisible. In the study of class C consisting   all absolutely non-divisible groups such as G, we come across the sub groups T_p(G) = the sum of all p-divisible subgroups and rad_p(G) = the intersection of all p^nG. The proper...

Isomorphisms and automorphism groups of a class of Cayley digraphs on Abelian groups

In this paper, we investigate problems about isomorphisms and automorphism groups of Cayley digraphs. A class of Cayley digraphs, corresponding to the so-called CDI-subsets, for which the isomorphisms are uniquely determined by the group automorphisms is characterized. Their automorphism groups are also characterized.

Cohomology of mapping class groups and the abelian moduli space

We consider a surface Σ of genus g ≥ 3, either closed or with exactly one puncture. The mapping class group Γ of Σ acts symplectically on the abelian moduli space M = Hom(π1(Σ), U(1)) = Hom(H1(Σ), U(1)), and hence both L 2(M) and C(M) are modules over Γ. In this paper, we prove that both the cohomology groups H1(Γ, L2(M)) and H1(Γ,C∞(M)) vanish.

Elementary Abelian Subgroups in p - Groups of Class 2 THÈSE

All the results in this work concern (finite) p-groups. Chapter 1 is concerned with classifications of some classes of p-groups of class 2 and there are no particularly new results in this chapter, which serves more as an introductory chapter. The “geometric” method we use for these classifications differs however from the standard approach, especially for p-groups of class 2 with cyclic center...
